Welcome to the Bicentenary of
This is an oral history project that aims to build a picture of life in
The project has four main aims:
To involve members of the Tasmanian community in telling their own story
To collect oral histories that will provide a body of historical material for future researchers
To encourage contemporary Tasmanians to examine their own history and the collective community history
To promote an understanding of the importance of oral history in understanding the past and increase knowledge of “best practice” methodologies in oral history
This kit guides you through the steps involved in recording an oral history. It provides historical information on what was happening at the time, help with planning your project, subject areas to guide your research and advice on best practice methodologies.
Who can be involved?
The project is particularly aimed at schools, but anyone with an interest in community history can be involved.
What will happen with the project?
At the end of the project, the material will be deposited in the Archives Office of Tasmania as a gift for future public use.
Transcripts will also be placed on the Tasmanian Bicentenary website at www.bicentenary.tas.gov.au as they are submitted during the year.
Schools, groups and individuals are also encouraged to develop their own ‘spin-off’ projects. For example, school websites could host a Community History section, with photos, interview transcripts, newspaper clippings and even songs from the period. Classroom projects could include research into the period and even dressing up. Interviewers and interviewees could have a shared morning or afternoon tea at the end of a group project.
